Joëlle Charlotte Snaith
Hello! I’m Joëlle, a South African audiovisual artist and designer living and working in London, UK.
Over the past 13 years I’ve worked in a range of creative fields, from web design to motion, interactive and product design. I feel happiest solving problems and creating elegant, usable experiences while exploring and understanding how humans interact with technology. I believe in design that is informed by research, and my purpose has become more and more driven by a desire to help people and to work on projects that make a meaningful impact in people’s lives.
While I started my career in design as a multimedia designer working in Flash, tinkering with table based css and cursing search engines, I’ve found that over the years my strengths lie in user experience and functional design. I really enjoy working directly with the people who use the products I work on and consider empathy to be one of the most important emotions for a designer working in product and service design. I am my best when working in an integrated team of coders, designers, writers and I love collaborating and learning.
From mid 2016 until the end of 2017 I worked at Eedi, a learning platform whose mission is to create happier, more fulfilled children through the democratisation of education. In May 2018 - after a brief stint of freelancing - I joined Coconut, a current account for freelancers and self-employed people, where the focus of my work is the design and prototyping of our Android and iOS apps.
In my spare time and in the after hours I work as an audiovisual artist where my focus is on exploring the connection between sound and form. This process takes a much more experimental approach, producing an output that is often unexpected and unknown at the start. Using frequencies and minimal structures I let the music I’m working with guide the visuals and emotions I am trying to convey.
These works range from music videos and digital artworks to generative realtime live visuals and performance, and are constructed of computer generated images driven by audio, resulting in images and forms that are largely sculpted by sound.
In 2017 I had the incredible opportunity to speak about my audiovisual work at OFFF Festival in Mexico City and close the festival with an audiovisual show. I was also stoked and honoured to collaborate with raddest dude Joshua Davis at the OFFFest Barcelona closing party. I love collaborating so please get in touch if you have any interesting collaborations or commissions.
